It has not been our intention to schedule these for extreme weather, but it seems to add something to the process, so perhaps we will take this into account when planning for Tag & Release III...

This was a larger (25-30 people or so, no?) and slightly more serious (not a value judgment, just an observation!) group than in February. It was an art-community think-sauna this time rather than a pornographic luddite-multimedia circus.

Projects presented were 100 Percents: An elaborate pyramid scheme by which art could be made, funded, and remade by local artists. A grant dedicated to funding (mostly likely digital) work that would ultimately belong to the public domain; created of small donations from members of the local arts community; administered relatively collaboratively by the donor base to applicants from roughly the same community. Outcome of discussion includes some refinement of the plan, some suggestions about how to administrate it, the possibility of the Berwick serving as a fiscal agent once the idea is slightly more developed. If you want to be involved in Ben's pyramid scheme for art read more about it on Lemming Trail.

Bumpkin Colony: A swath of campsites have been reserved on one of the Harbor Islands (Bumpkin) for Labor Day Weekend. Colonize the island with art, artists, and art installations! Carolyn and Megan are looking for applicants for the spots--proposals for what would be done with them--and wanted Tag & Release to help them think about criteria for the work/events that would be good limitation for the environment. Of course they were also inviting us all to come along too. Outcome of discussion were a few very good and basic constrictions that seemed likely to generate interesting proposals. If you want to colonize Bumpkin or to be informed about the dates, contact Megan at Berwickinstitute.org.

YUM: Susan signed up saying that she was going to teach us how to break social ice instantly, but she lied. Instead, she had us pair up, each holding an item of foodstuff (thanks Megan, Deb, Heather, Carolyn!), and discuss various questions about where food comes from and what it means to us while eating them. Then she told us about a part of the Berwick's Meet Me At The Table Project that will be taking place in Union Square, Somerville later this year called YUM. It's a public art research project focused on food that is native (ah, but what does native mean here?) to Union Square. Click here to find out more about YUM, or to participate in Meet Me At The Table.

Please Take Notice: Jasmine, in true Tag & Release form, brought an art project with her that she had started and was hoping we would all finish. It arose a few years ago after she lost someone she loved, and wanted to remind herself to stop and take notice of the world around her. She created dozens and dozens of labels with the phrase "Please Take Notice" printed on them in variety of fonts and sizes with different associations, and stuck them up wherever she felt notice should or could be taken. She still has dozens and dozens left, so she handed them out for the rest of us to distribute throughout reality. If you want to help finish, or rather continue Jasmine's project, you can either stop and take notice whenever you see one of the stickers or print your own labels and stick them where they should be stuck.

Artists At Large: Tommey, director of Artists at Large Inc in Hyde Park, wants to know if people know about the Hyde Park arts community. He asks us all to fill out a survey, and invites suggestions about how he can better promote what he's doing to the world outside of Hyde Park, and also how to better diversify his audience. His goal is to make art more accessible to people. He's doing great, community-building stuff, and you should go to his site and gallery and learn more about it.

In addition to the presentations, there was elaborate discussion about themes that that each project raised. Since things ran long and it was oppressively hot, we shelved the special educational segments for another T&R. We did manage to produce one collective project onsite though: a (slightly alcoholic!) compost pile that will be added to by other artists and will eventually feed the food growing in Susan's garden...

Next MMT Dinner Events Announced!

Meet Me At The Table is pleased to announce that its next two dinner conversations are in the works! The Glass Curtain Gallery has been providing her with more support than she’s ever gotten for any previous shows and much more support than she expected. Core is entirely carpentry dependent and Columbia College has provided a team of not only students devoted to the gallery, but a staff of preparators who have helped Nofziger build a meticulous installation that has fundamentally transformed the 2200 square foot layout of the space (incidentally the same size as the Boston Center for the Arts’s Mills Gallery). Nofziger isn’t a neophyte in the art world—she has been showing work for a decade now—however, after she moved to Boston from her native Kentucky in 2002 to begin an MFA at MassArt (2004), her career began to change scale.

After several well received solo shows over the last two and a half years following her graduation from MassArt, (her C.V. lists 10, including her thesis show, up to the present) Nofziger sought to be an Artist in Research (AIR) at the Berwick Research Institute. She spent her time in AIR program planning for her show at the Glass Curtain Gallery, essentially in an R&D phase of the project, and unlike all other AIR’s, had no work to show at the end of her spell at the Berwick. She hoped to extrapolate from her research at the Berwick an installation at The Glass Curtain, and completed the AIR program essentially with a set of architectural plans...

READ THE FULL ARTICLE ABOUT LIZ in this issue of BIG RED & SHINY

Announcing The 2007 AIR Artists!

After a year of learning the ropes, Rosie Branson Gill and Bonnie Bastien have taken the reins at the AIR Program. The artists have been chosen and the 2007 season is ready to get underway.

Here is the line-up for 2007!
April-June

Jon Taylor is interested in exploring clothing as an adaptive interface to the outside world. His work is a witty commentary on social norms, and especially those of blind consumerism. Taylor often creates characters who he outfits with clothing or structures that are an augmentation of the body and blend aspects of fashion, packaging and architecture. He then documents the character in situations that parody real events, highlighting and exaggerating the oddities of human behavior. At the Berwick he will be working towards a performance of a character he will create during his residency.

July-August

Maura Jasper wonders how the elderly experience our world of rapid change. Uncomfortable with these changes herself, she began to notice that in our culture of technology and youth, the elderly are often invisible, or barely present. Using technology and weather as her focus points, Jasper will use her Berwick residency to further develop "Weather You Remember", an online collection of weather reports delivered by senior citizens, as they recall and comment on the weather of their homes. This portraiture project attempts to capture and preserve moments and memories of a world we may or may not still inhabit.

September-November

Matthew Shanley wants us to get our hands dirty in the numbers! He will use his Berwick residency to develop "Our Knowledge Mashups", a tool for organizing and displaying data that combines numerical information from different sources and create an elegant visual display of the results. What relationships are hidden in numbers? Shanley believes there are many and that exploratory combinations of previously unmixed fields allow for the possibility to be inspired.

Tag & Release I

Present projects to purge, pass on, or pick up...

In the spirit of the evening's antiquainted technology, we proudly present the first Tag & Release event as blogged live by Heather and Maire...

Wow, look at those typos! During her residency, Nofziger will be working toward a new large-scale site-specific installation for Columbia College's Glass Curtain Gallery in March 2007. Designed by William Le Baron Jenney (widely considered to be the "father of
the skyscraper"), the Ludington Building (1890-91) is the city's earliest-surviving, steel-frame building.

With the Berwick, Nofziger aims to thoroughly examine, document, develop,
and challenge her process of working site-specifically, with this exhibition
as the outcome. Since a first site-visit in June, she has been compiling
information on Jenney and the space itself, considering its various
histories within the context of current events, and thinking about the
viewer's experience within the space. By compiling an in-depth documentation
of the development of a large-scale site-specific work Nofziger will create
an important experimental trace element. It will serve as a type of evidence
that reveals and solidifies the sometimes circuitous, and often invisible,
paths of investigation and planning.

Please visit www.nofzilla.com for more on her previous work.

Please visit <a href="<http://www.berwickinstitute.org>">www.berwickinstitute.org for more information and directions.

Pictured: "Spin", 2005 at Montserrat College of Art

The Artist-in-Research program is made possible by generous funding from the
LEF Foundation and the Massachusetts Cultural Foundation.

Berwickians in PURE - October 14 2006

Berwickians Andi Sutton, Christy Georg, iKatun, and Véronique d'Entremont will exhibit new work in…

PURE: A MULTI & MIXED MEDIA EXHIBITION
Curated by: Lisa Lunskaya Gordon

Opening Reception & Performance:
Saturday, October 14 6pm - 9pm
Gallery Hours: Saturdays & Sundays 12 - 5

The former office supply superstore
Brighton Mills Shopping Plaza
400 Western Ave Brighton, MA

A 20,000 square foot white box. 70 Artists. By using cameras, microphones, and large-scale video displays to create reconstructed street corners around Boston, the project will offer residents and passers-by portals of sight and sound between disparate neighborhoods and across social and geographical lines. Ewing plans to use the residency period to develop the video portal devices, connect with residents and community members in potential installation sites, and explore ways to use the technology as a tool for interactivity and dialogue.

John Ewing is a digital media artist and muralist who creates public art with an emphasis on community participation and social justice. He spent two years in El Salvador with an international development organization, using the arts to organize and inspire dialogue about human rights. Other work includes projects in Nicaragua, Uruguay and Cuba, as well as various cities in the U.S. Local projects include Symphony of a City, which portrayed Boston from 8 different perspectives by installing "headcams" on residents and projecting the resulting video footage on city hall and streaming it on the web www.symphonyofacity.org.

Currently he is an MFA candidate at Rhode Island School of Design and directs HUMAN, a Juvenile Rights Advocacy Project in Dorchester that teaches art to incarcerated girls.

Welcome John!

AIR Alums Devil Music at the MFA Tomorrow

Performing a Live Soundtrack to the Rare Silent Western:
BIG STAKES

Museum of Fine Arts Boston
465 Huntington Ave

SATURDAY APRIL 15TH 7:30 SHARP
Tickets 12$ regular admission
10$ members

ACTION-ROMANCE-DEADLY LIZARDS-MEXICAN JUMPING BEANS-&-THE KKK

In Big Stakes, J.B.
