The Exquisite

The Berwick's SPI program is pleased to announce it's next incubator project, The Exquisite, a local art publication debuting it's first issue this fall.

Curated by Andrew DeVechio and supported by the Berwick Research Institute, The Exquisite team is currently seeking your submission to help launch it's debut!  See below for more about the exquisite and the call for entries.  Check the Berwick blog for upcoming events and info as they unfold!

From the project proposal:

The Exquisite is a newspaper that will run bi-annually with the intent of expanding to
quarterly. Each issue will focus on one contemporary theme that is playing a
significant role in our daily lives. The title, Exquisite, is in reference to the exquisite
corpse, a game the Surrealists made popular in the early 19th century, a game that
allowed a story to pass through several different players each contributing individual
input. The game builds up in layers, and only once unfolded does the entire idea
become explicit. Layers in the Exquisite will unfold information similarly, each
contributor will help the reader fully grasp the topic and more specifically will help to
draw lines that were once unexplored. Visual content will be paired with scientific
data, poetry with prose, and interviews with illustrations. What began as nonsense
will become clear through the process of unraveling information from a variety of
mediums and reader will walk away with a better sense of understanding.

Issue No. 1: Trash. Trash is one of the most accessible and prominent topics to date.
Our streets are littered and our garbage cans packed yet we!re unsure what to do
with it all. It is made of the stuff that is no longer desired and so it!s no wonder trash
has been given little attention. Though the general public has been ignoring the
growing mounds (aside from acting “green”) artists, scientists, writers and performers
have been investigating the subject for years. I will gather some of this information
and answer questions like: have we always been creating trash? where exactly does
our trash go? how does trash keep records of us? is there a good side to making so
much trash? This information combined will allow the reader to answer the ultimate
question for herself/himself; where do we go from here?
