STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Eugene Tan Closing
Starting our AIR season off with a flourish, Eugene Tan has turned the Berwick Studios into the ‘On Your Sleeve’ boutique where he is sewing, selling and developing garments for a series of two performances. These works are based on Richard Foreman’s notebooks from The Ontological-Hysteric Theater. Tan’s project asks at what point does a garment cease to be clothing and become costume? How can meaning and narrative be embedded in a garment? Taking these and other questions as a point of departure, Tan reconsiders the basic structure of a garment and tries to find ways to embed meaning into the process of constructing clothing. Visit the boutique to try on the garments, and see the performances that stem from them.

ON YOUR SLEEVE is a functioning boutique open by appointment.

Eugene Tan is an artist working in performance using various forms of expression including interdisciplinary performance, theatre, interventions, costume and scenic design. He currently works at The Theater Offensive as the Assistant Director of True Colors Out Youth Theater, has directed readings of Surviving the Nian and directed, designed and performed in A Street Theater Named Desire, a guerilla theater AIDS outreach project in the Boston Fenway. Eugene founded Deflowered Collision, an interdisciplinary performance collective. After producing experimental work involving actors, video artists, journalists and designers, Deflowered Collision evolved into a series called Deflowered in a Day, a series of rapid process interdisciplinary performances created in 8 hours and presented in theatre lobbies, elevator landings and stairwells.
